Who do you say that I am?

Jesus asked the question Himself. Scripture answers it with dozens of names — each one showing a different angle of the same person.

Immanuel

Traditionally understood as God with us

Scripture

Matthew 1:23

Context

Matthew applies Isaiah's sign to the birth of Christ.

Reflection

The promise is not primarily rescue from a distance but presence in the middle of it.

Immanuel, be with me in the ordinary hours as well as the hard ones.

Jesus

Traditionally understood as the LORD saves

Scripture

Matthew 1:21

Context

The name given by the angel to Joseph before the birth.

Reflection

His name was announced with its purpose attached — a rare thing even in Scripture.

Jesus, save me in the places I keep trying to save myself.

Christ / Messiah

Traditionally understood as the Anointed One

Scripture

John 1:41

Context

Andrew's first words to his brother Simon after meeting Jesus.

Reflection

The title carries centuries of waiting behind a single sentence.

Anointed One, You are what the waiting was for.

Lamb of God

Traditionally understood as the sacrifice who takes away sin

Scripture

John 1:29

Context

John the Baptist's declaration as Jesus approaches the Jordan.

Reflection

The image reaches back to Passover and forward to the cross in four words.

Lamb of God, thank You for carrying what I could not.

Good Shepherd

Traditionally understood as the one who lays down His life for the sheep

Scripture

John 10:11

Context

Spoken to a people who knew exactly how much a shepherd was worth.

Reflection

Shepherding in Scripture is not sentimental. It is night watches, wilderness and risk.

Good Shepherd, lead me where I would not choose to go alone.

Prince of Peace

Traditionally understood as the ruler who brings wholeness

Scripture

Isaiah 9:6

Context

Part of Isaiah's promise of a child to be born and a government upon His shoulders.

Reflection

Peace here is not the absence of conflict but the presence of right rule.

Prince of Peace, govern what is chaotic in me.

Light of the World

Traditionally understood as the one who ends darkness

Scripture

John 8:12

Context

Spoken in the temple treasury, likely near the great lampstands.

Reflection

Light does not argue with darkness. It simply arrives.

Light of the World, shine where I have grown used to the dark.

Bread of Life

Traditionally understood as the one who sustains

Scripture

John 6:35

Context

Said the day after He fed a crowd who came back looking for more bread.

Reflection

He offers Himself where people were hoping for a smaller answer.

Bread of Life, satisfy the hunger I keep taking to lesser things.

The Way, the Truth and the Life

Traditionally understood as the path to the Father

Scripture

John 14:6

Context

Spoken to anxious disciples on the night before the crucifixion.

Reflection

The answer to 'how do we get there' turned out to be a person, not directions.

Lord, when I do not know the way, remind me that I know You.

Alpha and Omega

Traditionally understood as the first and the last

Scripture

Revelation 1:8

Context

Among the opening declarations of the Revelation.

Reflection

He is not only present in the story. He is its bookends.

First and Last, hold the parts of my story I cannot finish.

King of Kings

Traditionally understood as sovereign over all authority

Scripture

Revelation 19:16

Context

The title written on the robe and thigh of the rider called Faithful and True.

Reflection

Every other authority in your life is a smaller one.

King of Kings, reign where I have handed the throne to something else.

Kinsman Redeemer

Traditionally understood as the near relative who restores what was lost

Scripture

Ruth 4:9-10

Context

Boaz redeems the inheritance of Naomi's family and takes Ruth as his wife.

Reflection

Redemption in Ruth is legal, familial and costly — and it is how Scripture teaches the word.

Redeemer, buy back what I assumed was gone for good.
